Claus presently assists the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs on effective disaster response and is involved in BREXIT handling.

Until 2016 Claus advised President Juncker on crisis management and humanitarian issues. Earlier on he was Director General for Communication and from 2011 the Humanitarian Aid and Civil Protection Department (ECHO)

Claus joined the DELORS 2 Commission in 1990 and participated in the shaping of the EURO, the Enlargement with Sweden, Austria and Finland, the European Social dimension and Environmental issues.

He subsequently worked on the fight against fraud and organised crime, on social and labour market issues and was directly involved in the further enlargement of the EU to the East.

Among others, Mr. Sørensen held functions such as Director for Climate and International Environmental issues, Head of Cabinet for Agriculture and later for Development and Humanitarian assistance. He has a background as a diplomat posted at the Danish Delegation to the OECD in Paris and as Trade and Finance councilor at the Danish Permanent Representation to the European Union.

Claus has a Master in Economics from Aarhus University and is regularly lecturing at the University of Lund, Kings College and Copenhagen.
